The vote share of the two biggest parties has been falling steadily for decades. Recent polling shows it could fall below 50%. And yet we still have a voting system designed to silence all other voices. It's time for a system update. It's time for PR. Graphic by TLDR News UK

Prof Sir John Curtice points out that we are moving towards five-party politics. Yet, our electoral system is ill-equipped for even two major parties. We could see councils and Mayors being elected despite most locals being against their policies.

📊 There’s a growing realisation in Britain that multi-party politics is colliding with a broken, 2-party voting system ⚠️ And that this risks producing random results, more chaos & more distrust The public know this - and here’s just some of the media commentary 🧵 1/10

Very well put, Daisy Cooper MP 🔶 💯 There is a reason why trust in politics has broken down. We have a system that severely limits voter choice, while forcing politicians to argue instead of figuring out what they have in common. Proportional Representation is the solution.

First Past the Post is a relic of the past; in today’s multi-party age, it is no longer fit for purpose. People are not getting what they’re voting for. It's time to look at fairer systems that can be relied upon to accurately reflect the views of today’s voters.

“We’re now the biggest APPG in Parliament and the public supports our call for a National Commission for Electoral Reform by a margin of five to one. The government should listen and act.” 💬 Alex Sobel MP for Leeds Central and Headingley, Chair of the APPG for APPG for Fair Elections 🧵 1/3 politics.co.uk/news/2025/05/0…

📊 “First Past the Post simply isn't designed to cope with a multi-party system - at least not if you believe in fairness”, says Marie Goldman MP 🔶 📷We “need to look at how elections are conducted”, agrees Lucy Powell MP, Leader of the UK House of Commons

"We've now entered what I've described as the zone of electoral chaos. To have system that can spit out any random result like a fruit machine is not in anyone's interest." 💬 Rob Ford (Not the Canadian one. Or his brother.) explains what's at stake

People are already voting as if we have a multi-party electoral system. FPTP can't keep up with this shift in voting behaviour. electoral-reform.org.uk/the-end-of-the…

In GE2019, the Tories got 56% of seats on 44% of the votes. In GE2024, Labour got 63% of seats on 34% of the votes. We need to change this system so that seats match votes - voters should get the MPs and policies they vote for. #ChangeTheVotingSystem
