Every June 16, we mark “Youth Day,” this term flattens a profound truth: South Africa’s 1976 youth uprising was neither spontaneous nor apolitical—it was a coordinated act of resistance engineered by the Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC) and its fearless leader, Zephania Mothopeng.

At the 1979 Bethal Treason Trial, Judge Curlewis delivered a damning verdict: “You Mothopeng acted to sow seeds of anarchy and revolution. The riots you engineered and predicted eventually took place in Soweto on June 16"

This was not spontaneous. Witnesses revealed that Mothopeng held meetings of the PAC’s underground network “Young African Religious Movement,”mapping mass student action—that would cripple apartheid state infrastructure, then adults would strike, triggering nationwide revolution

18 PAC leaders, including Mothopeng, were secretly tried and imprisoned for their role in this uprising,the largest political trial held by apartheid South Africa. Their sentencing totaled nearly 162 years behind bars . Yet, their names-including Mothopeng’s-have been erased

This erasure is politically convenient. It elevates a generic “youth” narrative while minimizing ideological struggle and deliberate planning by PAC militants. In contrast, PAC doctrine—embodied by Mothopeng—was unapologetically revolutionary.

Know that you’re worthy of being treated well even if you have yet to experience it. Instead of clinging to those who dishonor you, practice appreciating yourself.
