Ready to go .... ANZMOSS-ANZGOSA 2020!! We have international experts discussing the challenges in multimodal treatment of oesophago-gastric malignancy. Then it’s my turn to present on measures of muscularity in preoperative risk screening. Hope to ā€˜see’ some dietitians there 😁

Congratulations Irene Deftereos! A fantastic study showing the importance of preoperative dietetic intervention. Looks like we still have some work to do to ensure that all patients can access that care. This is great progress though.

Upper GI Surgery Dietitians may be the first to identify symptoms of anastomotic strictures after oesophagectomy. An important reminder from @RoosPouw at #ISDE2022 …. strictures are common (10-43%), associate with dysphagia, weight loss and reduced QOL, and can occur very late.

Back at #ISDE2022 - on multiple occasions, malnourished oesophagectomy patients were defined only by BMI <18.5. We know that malnutrition occurs irrespective of BMI!! Time to use more comprehensive malnutrition definitions in surgical risk stratification tools. ISDE.net

A comprehensive summary of the value of body composition in assessing preoperative nutrition risk & and the novel methods available. An important insight for surgical dietitians!

Twice in one day! Work from A/Prof Lee-anne Chapple being discussed by Zudin in the ā€˜New concepts in preventing muscle wasting in critically ill patients’ session at #SCWD23 Many of these concepts could be applied to cancer cachexia

I found this so interesting! Increased collagen within/fibrosis of respiratory muscles of patients with oesophageal cancer is associated with cachexia. Could this help to explain why low muscle mass on CT is associated with post-op pneumonia? #SCWD23 SCWD

An inspiring few days at the AANZGOSA conference with Nick Maynard highlighting the importance of dietetic follow-up in symptom management & QOL. There was a call for more (than two!) surgical dietitians to attend in the future. I highly recommend - I learnt so much!
