👇🏼 ‘In his 1978 article "Efficacy & Safety of Induced Seizures (EST) in Man," he states, "The principal complications of EST [Electro Shock Therapy] are death, brain damage, memory impairment, & spontaneous seizure’. As Sarah P. Hancock, MS, CRC ♿ says, why no rehab for those of us harmed?

My story is not one of “misdiagnosis” or “overmedication.” I sought help from our country’s top psych institutions + “met the criteria” for the various DSM labels I was given. My experience of treatment-induced harm is the byproduct of the MH industry working exactly as intended.

We've now seen a preview of the forthcoming antidepressant withdrawal paper. It's shocking. On the basis of a few short-term company trials (mostly 8 weeks) the authors conclude that antidepressant withdrawal hardly exists! God help us if the media report this junk uncritically😳

Many academics, researchers & patient representatives tried to access the Science Media Center's closed-door brief with the media this morning on the new antidepressant withdrawal paper. We were denied access. All critical voices have been excluded, so one narrative can prevail.

We weren't there to disrupt but to ask the crucial questions about the study's significant limitations - i.e. it tells us nothing about real-world antidepressant use (being based on mostly 8-12 week trials). Now the narrative will be shaped by mostly pharma-linked invited experts

The main result is based on 11 randomised trials (picture). 6 go for 8 weeks, 4 go for 12 weeks and 1 for 26 weeks. The 26 week study and one of the 12 week studies involve agomelatine, a drug well known not to have much withdrawal effect. So mostly 8-12 week studies. 2/n

In the UK up to 4 million people take antidepressants for more than 2 years, and 2 million people take them for more than 5 years. In the US at least 25 million people take antidepressants for more than 5 years, and millions for > 10 years. (3/n)

There is a strong relationship between duration of use and withdrawal effects. We surveyed patients in the NHS and found that people who had used antidepressants for more than 2 years were 10 times more likely to have withdrawal effects…(4/n)

Thank you so much Mark Horowitz @markhoro.bsky.social for putting the new data into context with clear, evidence-based analysis. You highlight that withdrawal is real and often linked to duration of use - reaffirming the need for caution and helping people make informed choices on antidepressants.

"Those of us who speak out have our voices silenced by a system unwilling to acknowledge the breadth of this crisis.” Activists are looking forward to meeting Melanie Leahy, to learn from, and stand in solidarity with families who have lost loved ones in mental health services.

This👇🏼 … the time to ignore, downplay or downright dismiss people’s experiences of withdrawal must end. Informed consent is every persons right. Ignoring the human rights of people just because they are struggling demonstrates how we can be treated as ‘less than’ people!
