Not a single backbench Conservative MP has bothered to show up to today's debate marking the fifth anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic. 240,000 dead and they couldn't give us 5 minute's of their time.

Wanted to put forward a thread about #PEM since there have been some new developments and also because I just need to get some of this out of my head and work through it. Folks with infection- and exposure-associated chronic illnesses (IACIs) like #LongCOVID, #MECFS, 1/

mechanisms drive your PEM, pushing through until you crash is going to cause mitochondrial damage and worsening issues. Pacing is an energy management tool that can prevent this. I really love this video from Long COVID Physio describing pacing: youtu.be/USLg5FT86TQ 14/

Current PIP criteria already fail people with energy-limiting conditions. Proposed changes will deepen this injustice, with devastating consequences. Jo Platt backs our call for a system that supports people with #LongCovid in Big Issue Link in next tweet.

When the next pandemic strikes, in terms of respiratory protection: - FFP3s do have a place for short-term exposure - FRSMs have NO PLACE AT ALL - Powered respirators must be the ‘go-to’ RPE for sessional use & care of infectious patients in all health and social care settings #3

David Osborn (@safedavid3) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This may sound like heresy but, in terms of Case Fatality Rate, Covid-19 was something of a ‘pussycat’ of a pandemic compared with what could hit us in future: - Covid-19 (initially ~2.5%) - MERS (37%) - SARS-2003 (15%) - Avian flu H5N1 (50% 1 in 2 die… Think on it...) #5 of 8

The Government MUST stop dawdling. It must stop deluding itself that surgical masks are okay. It must stop listening to “droplet” numpties. It must prepare to protect this nation and especially its frontline healthcare workers by investing in this technology. #6 of 8

David Osborn (@safedavid3) 's Twitter Profile Photo

If HCWs aren't well-protected against a lethal pandemic, will they go to work? Especially after the lies that surgical masks will keep them safe. Especially after seeing colleagues with Long Covid callously sacked. The Government has to regain their trust or God help us all #7

This paper provides more background on the urgent need for powered respirators. Submissions to the Covid Inquiry that it is too difficult to train HCWs in their use or that the technology is too complex for them were rubbish. ASK SOUTHAMPTON ! tinyurl.com/7w9rx8as #8 of 8

Since I posted two threads about PEM yesterday, some general feedback themes have been coming up, so I just wanted to address them: 1) Thank you to those who rightly pointed out that in my description of PEM I should have mentioned that PEM can have permanent consequences to 1/

Nice paper here by Mark Faghy’s group. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Post-exertional submaximal aerobic system impairment/early anaerobiosis is apparent in this cohort with Long Covid and (relatively) mild PEM. Long COVID Physio physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
