100% this. If you saw that first trailer and went "ew, no thanks", I fully understand, but PLEASE give this movie a chance. It's great for fans and first-time audiences looking to see what the franchise is actually about. Don't let this one flop, it deserves to be celebrated.

As a superfan with a wall of Star Trek toys and books, I think it's a terrible idea to try to tailor your story to what you think will make some superfan with a wall of toys and books upset rather than just tell the story you want to tell to the best of your ability.
