The more, the merrier! Between the collections and the prep lab, we have a full house this summer - especially with so many interns joining to practice preparation, conservation & digitization skills! #MCZVertPaleo #FossilFriday

How did mammalian backbone function evolve? To find out #MCZVertPaleo performed "digital experiments" on a whole bunch of synapsid fossil backbones. Turns out that some characteristically mammalian vertebral functions arose in our distant ancestors! doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2…

A peek inside a 3D photogrammetry workshop taught by #MCZVertPaleo’s Peter Bishop. Staff & interns practiced photographing specimens to make computer models of real fossils! #FossilFriday

This prehistoric see urchin, Cidaris mortoni, shows us just where its tube feet were! While spines would attach to the two outer columns of plates, the narrower central columns' pinpoint pores to allow the echinoderm’s feet to escape its shelly test. #MCZInvertPaleo #FossilFriday

This Merycoidodon gracilis skull is broken at the back, exposing the naturally red endocast of this horse-like animal’s brain. #VertPaleo #FossilFriday

Tiny crab! It’s very small! Found without data in the collections, but we still love this little arthropod and its slabmates. #MCZInvertPaleo #FossilFriday

Tiny jaws can take big bites! Grasshopper mice, like this Onychomys fossilis from the Pleistocene of Kansas, are insectivorous and can even eat vertebrates like snakes and other mice! #MCZVertPaleo #FossilFriday

Did you know fish have teeth? Conrad Wilson, a Carleton University PhD student, is examining microscopic wear on Paleozoic fish teeth to understand their ecology and evolution! He shows off one of his research specimens, the fossil fish Cheirolepis canadensis. #FossilFriday #MCZVertPaleo

This year, #MCZVertPaleo focused on increasing internship opportunities for students and recent grads. Today's intern highlight is Connor Dumas. Connor's internship focused on rehousing and photographing the VP Mammal type collection and learning fossil prep skills. #FossilFriday
