MDDUS was established in 1902, at the time to meet the demand of Scottish doctors and dentists for an MDO with unique knowledge of Scots law. Nine doctors and one dentist attended the first meeting – since then we’ve grown to more than 65,000 members across the UK!

In our first big legal case, MDDUS successfully defended Dr Marion Gilchrist, one of the first two women to gain a medical degree in Scotland. Alongside her accomplished career in general practice, Dr Gilchrist was a suffragist who spent her life campaigning for women’s rights.

During WW1 our member Dr Cooke, serving in Egypt, wrote to MDDUS for help obtaining ā€˜liberation’ after his term of duty. After correspondence with MDDUS, the War Office agreed to ā€˜liberate’ him and he was able to sail for home.

By the 1920s, there was a serious need for reform in dental legislation to prevent people with no qualifications from practising dentistry. MDDUS consulted members, arranged meetings between practitioners and submitted evidence to the committee to inform policy and drive change.

MDDUS suspended subscriptions for members in the armed forces during WW2. Members like Mr Sandy Flockhart, a dentist whose extraordinary story includes parachuting through gunfire with a 60 lb kitbag tied to his ankle and learning dental mechanics in a POW camp.

One of MDDUS’ cases contained a landmark judgement on the establishment of liability by a doctor when Dr Hanley found himself facing legal action after a needle broke. He was found not liable to pay damages and Lord President Clyde delivered the now famous judgement:

Alexander Macgregor was largely responsible for organising the Dental Health Benefits Scheme after the war. He was a respected MDDUS member and the longest serving office-bearer in MDDUS history. He died in 1963 at the age of eighty-nine.

Facing an inquiry in the Falkland Islands after fire destroyed the King Edward VII hospital, Dr Bleaney called MDDUS. An adviser went the distance – travelling 8,000 miles to support her. The final report commended Dr Bleaney for doing all she could to alleviate fire risks.

MDDUS introduced our legal advice helpline thirty-four years ago, giving members access to 24/7 expert legal advice. Since then, the service has gone from strength to strength - in 2023 we helped with more than twelve thousand advice queries across our medical and dental teams.
