The Graham tariff bill would shut down trade with China, India, Turkey, half of the EU, and dozens more just for buying energy from Russia. It could trigger a global depression. One of the most reckless, ill-conceived economic proposals I’ve ever seen. thehill.com/homenews/senat…

No Russian official has ever said anything close to what this headline suggests. But, yes, this is a war between Russia and Ukraine as well as a confrontation between Russia and the West. Both of these prongs have to be resolved to get a durable peace.

For the first time in over two years, Japan has received Russian crude—on a blacklisted ship. Taiyo Oil took 600,000 barrels via the Voyager, sanctioned by both the US & EU. Tokyo cited energy security. Crude loaded May 25, docked June 10. (via Bloomberg).

Western policy toward Belarus is counterproductive to American interests in Eastern Europe. It's long past time to chart the outlines of US-Belarus rapprochement-- here's my view, for The National Interest, on how a deal can look. nationalinterest.org/feature/can-be…

This myth just won't die. Russia has no treaty obligations to intervene in this war on behalf of Iran, nor has any Kremlin official ever suggested that Moscow would do so. Russia's set of interests in the Middle East includes maintaining a constructive relationship with Israel.

We made promises without seriously considering what it meant to fulfill them. An “I told you so,” on Ukraine. nationalreview.com/corner/honor-a…

As demonstrated by the events of the past several days, it's really not. Anyone interested in this should read the text of the Russia-Iran treaty, which obliges neither party to assist the other.

Congratulations to the administration on this massive stride forward for U.S. diplomacy in eastern Europe. I've been a vocal advocate of a renewed approach to Belarus, and it's immensely gratifying to see this policy come to fruition. nationalinterest.org/feature/can-be…

In the world of magic democracy vs autocracy linkages, this is somehow bad for RU despite Putin having long opposed Iran's nuclear program, maintaining a quite positive relationship with Israel, and having no concrete treaty obligations toward Tehran.

Congratulations to Gen Kellogg on a historic visit to Minsk with a message of US-Belarus reengagement, something we have worked towards--including back when it was quite an unpopular position-- for years. I am proud to continue supporting this process over the long haul.

Spot on, Reid Tillman Smith: "If you're treaty-bound to defend one third of humanity, you're going to get pulled into some really unpleasant places at times of your adversaries’ choosing."

Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau runs one of the most popular social media accounts of any American political figure, which is why he takes his cues from the very best. "I felt very empowered by President Trump. I don't know if I woulda done this if not for the president."

Regardless of what comes of it, make no mistake that a phone call on this level represents a diplomatic thaw between Putin and the Euro-Atlantic core.

After the war in Ukraine, commentary on the “Axis” became a cottage industry. Ironically, many of its loudest proponents had no prior expertise on Iran and had scarcely examined these relationships before. And, at some point, North Korea got awkwardly thrown in.
