What’s happening in Israel? Please read and share this thread that I wrote to help clarify the dramatic (and complicated) events that threaten to turn Israel into a dictatorship in a matter of weeks 👇

Announcement time: I am thrilled to share with you all that I will be joining the linguistics department at Hebrew University as a Senior Lecturer (Assistant Prof), starting Spring 24. I'll be sad to leave here. But I am VERY excited to start my own lab. And to do so back home, in Israel!

These extra time estimates sound right. Institutionalized solutions are key. But meanwhile - if you're a native English speaker just be kind to non native speakers around you and try helping them out more

Controversial opinion: 50% of disagreements in theoretical linguistics are not really disagreements. It’s people being interested in different aspects of language. Their views are actually compatible. 30% is misunderstandings and would be resolved if notation/theory is clarified

I, like many of us right now, am at a lost for words. Michael Peer managed to explain the current situation eloquently in the post below. Please share.

My family has been taken to Gaza. We don't know their medical condition, we know that if my uncle isn't released soon he could die, he has a degenerative disease and needs treatment. They are European citizens. I need anyone with any contacts to get in touch with me ASAP.

If you're sending a work email to an Israeli or Palestinian colleague (no matter where they are located now), please start with: "How are you doing? I hope your family is safe. It must be hard to attend to work these days, but in case you get around to it.."

Very pleased to see this article in print! In a study with 2000 subjects, we track how people read syntactically complex sentences, and find that word predictability estimated from language models does a poor job of explaining the human data. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Paper alert!📢 Titus von der Malsburg and I looked hard into agreement attraction configurations in grammatical sentences, and, against all probability, found stable attraction effects in 3 experiments: authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S07…. Why did we find the effects when 30+ other studies failed to?
