Let’s celebrate her being the first racialized woman mayor but never exclude her credentials. Her story and values are likely largely informed by her identity, but make no mistake, her win was a result of intellect, hard work & the ability to imagine the almost unimaginable.

Let’s not allow anyone to disrespectfully use her last name in slogans & headlines. “Stop Chow Now” made me cringe every single time I heard it. It’s low key, basic as hell, anti-Asian discrimination. Put some respect on her beautiful Chinese name.

Let’s hold her accountable & respectfully disagree with her. Audre Lorde said, “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” I would add deliberate & resolve to the list because differences are challenging.

i haven't really got a coherent take on this but something doesn't sit right with me that raymond moriyama was interned by the federal government during his childhood and now in his 90s the provincial government is gonna knock down his first and widely celebrated project.

This would be the result in schools in Canada too. It is embedded & unexamined anti-Black racism in education and society. That is why antiracist, decolonizing education is necessary for teachers and school leaders.
