Growth staging #corn is important for timing herbicides, nitrogen and other practices. Methods are based on counting fully emerged leaves with a visible collar. Measuring the free-standing height can help confirm stage as well. 🌽#mscorn #MSUext #mscrops #plant25 #ag #farming

Sometimes you just need to step back. This #corn grown in our research plots at the MSU North Farm was pounded by hail. However, the growing point is still underground, so it has capability to recover. 🌽#mscorn #MSUext #mscrops #plant25 #hail #ag #weather

Prevalent rain has us behind in many respects. Many #corn fields have progressed well into rapid growth stages, potentially jeopardizing safety of many planned pesticides. Thus, be cautious, follow label instructions, and verify crop growth stage. 🌽#mscorn #MSUext #plant25

Weeks of rain has stalled nitrogen fertilization, leaving some #corn in a pickle. These suggestions will help crop response: ✅Don’t apply N fertilizer to saturated soil ✅Prioritize unfertilized fields first ✅Moderate granular fertilizer rate to limit leaf burn 🌽#mscorn

Sunshine brings a very welcome opportunity to catch up on field operations and improve #corn health. Many fields are in dire need of nitrogen and weed control. All can use the sunshine! 🌽#mscorn #MSUext #plant25 #mscrops #agriculture #soilfertility #farming #ag #farm

The nutrient issue of the week is sulfur. We have rampant nitrogen problems also, but don’t confuse these. S deficiency is evident as interveinal yellowing in the upper #corn leaves. Soggy soils surely intensify issues, but don’t skimp on this key nutrient. 🌽 #mscorn #MSUext

If your #corn is dark green and healthy, you have some leeway when you apply supplemental N. It is not critical to apply prior to tassel. Also, #fertilizer will not interfere with pollination. Soil does need to be dry. 🌽#mscorn #MSUext #mscrops #plant25 #soilfertility

Staging taller vegetative #corn is harder since lower leaves die or are displaced as the stalk grows. These leaves must still be accounted for. Noting length may help ID. Leaf 2 ~ 4” Leaf 3 ~ 6.5” Leaf 4 ~ 9 to 10” 🌽#mscorn #MSUext #mscrops #plant25 #agriculture #farming

#Corn growth may struggle when planted into green #covercrops. However, vegetation burndown can effectively counter such challenges, while optimizing early planting opportunities. The cover crop plot on the left was terminated 4 wks prior to planting. 🌽#mscorn #MSUext

Uneven emergence & plant heights in this corn field are due soil crusting & excessive soil moisture caused by heavy rain in May. Non-uniform stands often result in lower yields. Farmers must carefully evaluate the costs & benefits before deciding to replant #Corn Crop Protection Network

After a few sunny days, #corn is wilting. If we check the #soil, it is clear moisture is not short. Accordingly, leaf wilt is a very unreliable indicator of #irrigation needs. More sunshine and aeration are the best cure for this matter. 🌽#mscorn #MSUext #plant25 #mscrops
