Is this for real? All NIH indirect costs cut to 15%. This would threaten most medical schools and academic hospitals across the US. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/n…

Senator Patty Murray (@pattymurray) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Trump's proposal is ILLEGAL & amounts to an indiscriminate funding cut for research centers of all sizes, NOT just Ivies. It will mean shuttering labs across the country, layoffs in red & blue states, & derailing lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction.

James Surowiecki (@jamessurowiecki) 's Twitter Profile Photo

NIH is legally prohibited by the Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2024 from changing indirect-cost rates across the board without the approval of Congress. This will be immediately challenged in court.

This framing is their framing, and NYT took the bait. The correct and accurate framing is: “Deep cuts to medical research threatens progress on cancer and heart disease research, costs the economy $80B, and threatens 300,000 jobs across red and blue states”

Useful infographic on where indirects (Facilities & Administration costs) go: cogr.edu/sites/default/… I've seen claims on here that '60% is taken out of the grant'. Not true - indirects are on top, 60% rate =~37% overhead. These costs are essential to biomed research.
