Retiring as a public school Principal and it does NOT need to be this way. Yes the job is hard, stressful, and long in hours. However, it should not have to be at the expense of our mental and physical health. But districts sadly make it so.

I forgot- also caring about and educating these same students. Oh, and leading upwards of 100 school staff in the district's mission, curriculum, initiatives- and being involved in their own ups and downs. It's like being the mayor of your own city.

Edutainment has been a major part of the downfall of education. It strains already tight budgets, exhausts already stressed teachers, & overstimulates already distracted students. Education is about instilling knowledge & forming character. Schools shouldn’t need an app for that.

Unless or until districts can definitively prove that 1:1 devices improve student achievement, they should be thrown in a trash heap.

To avoid burnout at work use the 30-30 rule: after 30 minutes of work, quit your job and disappear into the mountains for 30 years.

Too many, too often: • Too many school board members treating the job like a political springboard. • Too many superintendents afraid of losing theirs. • Too many students get lost in the middle. When leadership prioritizes politics over outcomes, kids pay the price.

Good superintendents do not allow meetings where disagreement is unwelcome. When no one speaks against ‘we’ve tried that before and it never worked,” the status quo has won. Silent consensus kills innovation and breakthrough performance. Speak up and insist on being heard.
