There is a twisted irony to a situation in which, once someone has despaired of their life having value, financial value is generated by validating their despair through assisting their death.

Everyone deserves dignity at the end of life but that starts with better care, not fewer options. Doctors and health professionals are raising concerns. I’ll be voting against the Assisted Dying Bill and continue to fight for proper investment in palliative care.

We need a robust epistemology of testimony, for everyday people, rapidly. Of all the impacts this will have, the most profound will be erosion of public trust. Seeing is not believing.

A wave of sadness hit me, not just for the despair this woman must have felt, but also that a doctor—one who had sworn an oath to ā€œdo no harmā€ā€”had affirmed her darkest thoughts. firstthings.com/im-sorry-my-co…

Our response as a society should be to emphasize the inherent, objective reality of equal human value - regardless of ability (or terminal prognosis) Legalizing assisted suicide does the opposite. It enshrines the concept that the value of your life is subjective and variable.

1. For this week’s The Spectator I interviewed as many hospice staff as I could, and found an extraordinary strength of feeling about the Leadbeater bill. Amy Proffitt, former president of the Association for Palliative Medicine, says: ā€˜It has the potential to destroy the sector.’

I’m hearing MPs are being reassured that their issues / concerns with the assisted dying Bill - such as Royal College of Physicians Royal College of Psychiatrists saying it’s not safe - can be ā€˜sorted out in the Lords’. MPs - if you do not believe that the Bill as it stands on Friday is safe, don’t vote for it.

ā€œIn the coming years, when abuses inevitably occur, when the public mood sours on the reality of an idea it superficially backs, each of the 314 MPs will have to account for the choice they made this afternoon.ā€ Indeed they shall.

Improving palliative and end-of-life care has never been more important. I am thrilled to announce the Impact Centre for Palliative and End-of-Life Care, which will accelerate better care for dying people by closing the gap between evidence and practice. kcl.ac.uk/research/the-i…
