My lukewarm take on this perennial is that while there’s no need for the left to “reclaim” Rawls, the left should welcome a political coalition with liberal egalitarians, given the present distribution of forces, prevailing forms of legitimation, etc

My even more lukewarm take is that it depends on context. As Honig once observed, Rawls is quite radical when living in the bad place. Stating and acting on the most basic truths can be radical when living in the bad place

Right. I've never been asked to to an external review either. I also only rarely get asked to do peer review (I almost always say yes!). While it is true that many academics are way over-burdened, those of us toiling in more obscure positions are often wholly ignored

Today, we learned that our dear Wallie has bone cancer. There are no good treatment options, and he's in a lot of pain. Wallie is the gentlest soul I have ever encountered. I have often remarked that he is in some sense too good for this world. It turns out I was right
