We wish farewell to Joseph Sheehan, CTO of School of Physics UCC on his retirement. Joe gave 43 years service to UCC and was a highly respected colleague, friend and mentor to many people. The turnout at his retirement celebration last Friday spoke for itself. The very best of luck Joe!

Researchers UCC Ireland's Macroscopic Quantum Matter Group have used a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) to write "UCC" with Caesium atoms on a CsV3Sb5 (CVS) sample!🔬

Researchers <a href="/UCC/">UCC Ireland</a>'s Macroscopic Quantum Matter Group have used a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) to write "UCC" with Caesium atoms on a CsV3Sb5 (CVS) sample!🔬

CVS comprises layers of Caesium and Antimony weakly bonded together. In the STM's cryogenic environment, the top layer is cleaved, revealing a clean Kagome lattice with randomly scattered Caesium atoms. These atoms must be removed for a clear scan.

SEFS@UCC (@sefsucc) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Dr. Yan, a postdoctoral researcher, accomplished this by using an atomically sharp tip and high current to precisely remove each Caesium atom, positioning them outside the scanning field.👏
