Coral reefs are at the heart of healthy, thriving #oceans. But they are being hit hard by climate change. Madison East, PhD student Cambridge Earth Sciences, studies how coral growth is affected by environmental change. #WorldOceanDay Madi explains why corals are cool in the gif below!

Happy faces in the field! Here are our first years studying the stratigraphy, faults and fossils of Ketton Quarry. #Geology #FieldWork Thanks to Madison East for these fab shots!

Who knew corals came in so many wonderful and intricate forms? 🐚🌊 And corals aren’t just pretty —they are vital for life, as PhD student Madi East explains in our new blog. #COP26 #ClimateChange 📷 Madison East Read more👉blog.esc.cam.ac.uk/?p=2179

Today, we're celebrating the UN Women in Science Day 👩🚀🌍💚 We asked our #WomenInScience what items they rely on for their everyday research, whether a spectrometer for measuring ancient gas trapped in ice, or wireless headphones for dancing in the lab! #IDWGS #IDWGS2022

First up is PhD student Madi East Madison East Madi studies how corals build their intricate skeletons, and the factors that impact how faithfully they record environmental data on the #climate of the past. Which items did she choose? Find out below! #IDWGS #IDWGS2022

It's #WorldOceansDay 🐳 Some fun facts about coral reefs: 🪸 They protect wildlife ⛈️Strengthen the seabed during storms 🌳Grow rings just like trees! ⏲️First formed on Earth 240 million years ago Our @MadiEast is visiting ANU Earth Sciences 🌏, studying how corals grow.

Interested in understanding the mechanistic links between (bio)mineral formation, environmental conditions and proxy systems? Join us in session 13a Goldschmidt! conf.goldschmidt.info/goldschmidt/20… Abstract deadline ***March 1st*** (Image credit: Winnie Fang)

BIG thank you to Cambridge Earth Sciences PhD students Madi & Winnie and our fab volunteers The Sedgwick Museum sharing their enthusiasm for all things coral today & helping families contribute to a glorious crowdsourced reef model 🪸 (my poor polyp efforts not shown) Madison East

Two of our PhD students, Madi East and Winnie Fang, ran a coral making activity with families at the The Sedgwick Museum on Saturday. The colourful creations will feature in an ongoing museum display 🪸🐚🌊 📷Liz Hide / Madison East

Last week's view from up Goat Fell, rounding off our first year trip to Arran. Not much view from the top, but happy faces peering through the mist! 😊😍 #FieldWork Thanks Madison East for the photos!

Saturday 22nd April is #EarthDay 🌍 If you have a question about climate change or want to learn more about what climate scientists do, why not ask 3 climate scientists from Cambridge Earth Sciences ? Pop your Qs in this thread and they will have an answer for you in the coming week 1/4

This #EarthDay2023, some of our fantastic researchers will be answering your questions on climate science!🌏 Drop your questions over to The Sedgwick Museum in the thread below. Our Madison East, Hassan Aftab & Gabby Kleber will then respond over the next week!

A great couple of days attending #GGRiP at Cambridge Earth Sciences. I had my first crack at creating visual summaries of the 15 min talks as I listened. Not easy! Apologies for any misrepresented science or typos, and the early talks I have missed here!!!

This summer, @oscarbranson and PhD students Madison East, Winnie Fang and Alice Ball, spent five weeks on Green Island, Taiwan, studying open ocean plankton (foraminifera). Their aim was to understand how forams grow their intricate shells and record paleoclimate info🐚🌊
