These Sitka spruce in one of Maelor's seedbeds are certainly doing their best to grow despite the grey weather. Sitka Spruce is fast-growing, with young trees growing as much as 1.5m a year even on exposed ground or poor soil. This makes them perfect for difficult climates.

These have got a way to go before they'll be harvested! Sitka spruce trees are known for their ability to produce quality timber. This is primarily due to the tree's rapid growth rate, straight stems, and minimal branching, which results in long, clear logs.

Somatic Embryogenesis, also know as SE, is the process of deriving an embryo from somatic cells. These petri dishes in our lab show germinating embryos after different timeframes and on slightly different media. Next stop for these tiny trees will be growing roots and shoots!

Checking the bud development on our Douglas Fir seed orchard. Spring frost can be very damaging on the newly opened buds, and a timely application of frost protection products/irrigation can make the difference between a good and a bad seed crop.

This cutting might look a bit funny now, but you can bet that in 30 years’ time it will be a majestic timber tree! It is one of our many trees propagated vegetatively from genetically superior stock - this means straighter, with fewer branches, and of course faster growing.
