but that's not the case at all in S aureus. when we looked at the distribution of pairwise genetic distances, they're crying out to be discretized. they form clear clumps, with almost no pairs that are 99.5% identical, i.e., intermediates between strains are very rare

New (animal) data on Cow-H5N1 virus. 1. Infection by oral or resp route leads to systemic spread 2. Transmits inefficiently by respiratory route in ferrets 3. May have ability to infect cells of upper respiratory tract of humans Overall, increased concern rdcu.be/dM9Gs

New in Science Magazine: app-based contact tracing for covid 🤒🤳📲 as well as reducing transmission, generated data for epidemic monitoring & analysis in real-time with unprecedented resolution. Example below: sharp spikes in transmission in England during last Euros, 2021 🇪🇺⚽

Overhauling pandemic plans and increasing pandemic response capacity is urgent. It is a mistake to think of it as a long-term aspiration against a theoretical risk. The risk posed by H5N1 influenza, uncertain as it is, is certainly higher than it has been for a long time.

Hello from London where I was greeted by a drunk gentleman from Belfast yesterday who insisted I'm dumb because I'm not Catholic. Not sure how he assumed what my religion is, but maybe my skin colour and sitting next to a woman wearing hijab on the train was enough for him? 🤷‍♂️

Very happy to have this one published in nature today!! 🤩🤩 Can we dig deeper into the intricate and ancient evolutionary history of the flaviviridae by comparing not only genetic sequence but also protein structure? answer is yes!! nature.com/articles/s4158…

“The discovery of otherwise animal infecting viruses in plants indicated that we may need to survey plants more extensively to understand the origins of animal viruses as well” great work by @josegabrielnb and Aris Katzourakis! nature.com/articles/s4156…
