Today I was asked to write a piece on sustainability of funding for hospices, including statutory support.I am happy to do so with my 19 years experience in The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice . What would I would have written 10 years ago.I suggest it would have been a brighter picture.

Around 40 staff at St Giles Hospice are sadly at risk of redundancy due to rising costs and inadequate government funding. This really can’t go on. Our Chief Executive Toby Porter (NB on Blue Sky) speaks about why the government must announce measures to support hospices in financial crisis.

Government funding for hospices is failing to keep up with rising costs. Most expenses are covered by charity donations, which is unsustainable. Hospices want to support the NHS more, but they need fair funding to do so. It's time for change. Read more: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Since 1996, National Garden Scheme has donated over £7.4m towards hospice care across the UK. The gardens at Shooting Star Children's Hospices provide a space where families receiving specialist care can make memories together.
