Keynote speaker Ivan Franceschini describing “compound capitalism” and new forms of modern slavery and humanitarian crises created by the scamdemic in Asia. #CIRC2023

I love how Jack Qiu is updating van Dijk's metaphor of the digital #platform 'tree' (journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/14…) by conceptualizing Chinese distributed platform models as #Banyan trees, with extended root systems above and below ground (nca.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.108…). #CIRC2023

Shame I won't be able to catch up w/ Lianrui Jia at #CIRC2023 in person, but good to see her zoom presentation on the 'Geographies of the Financialized Chinese Platform Economy'. Particularly intriguing: how the platform economy is turning uncertainty into a monetizable resource.

"Western tech giants are key enablers China's outbound tech investment". Refreshing to have an event on China's role in the Global South that takes the US vs China dichotomy as an outdated/non helpful framing by default #CIRC2023 Thanks Malavika Jayaram

I'm very much enjoying Suruchi Mazumdar's research on how #TikTok became a 'low technology' in #India, deployed by working-class and migrant users for self-deprecating social commentary, and then maligned by middle-classes as the 'lowest caste' version of social media. #circ2023

That was a fun discussion, with loads of exciting empirical results from Africa and the Middle East that further confirms what we've also found LeidenAsiaCentre: that local actors leverage #China's investment into e.g. the 'Digital Silk Road' to their own local advantages. #circ2023

Not a PPT. That’s the beautiful Chiang Mai University campus providing a backdrop for the rare presenter without slides. Adam Arvidsson #CIRC2023
