Obviously a lie, made to make ethnic minorities feel better, but it then gets taken literally, feeding a sense of grievance that their groups’ contribution to ā€œbuilding Britain upā€ is never properly recognised.

Bad take, Brexit has mainly so far served to expose the rot as running deeper than we thought. But it was a coordinating point for all those opposed to open borders etc and has removed some of the constraints which would bind a future government intent on changing things.

This takes the wrong lessons from Denmark. Assimilation and integration are only possible with very low numbers of immigrants. Dispersing new arrivals around the country will be just like dispersing illegal immigrants in hotels and HMOs, totally against local wishes.

We could fix this immediately by fully automating food delivery using robots. But because of the Highways Act of 1835 (intended to ban carriages from pavements but applied to robots) this is prohibited apart from under tiny pilot schemes.

'Slovakian paedophile who gang raped schoolgirl, 12, starred in rap video funded by British taxpayers.' Sometimes a headline reveals a lot about somewhere; none of it good. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…

Britain used to explicitly link housing & infra; the Met railway would buy up land, run a railway there, and then sell the much more valuable land for development into new homes and towns. We've stopped doing this, but one small tweak would let homes & infra be built together🧵

Londoners are paying an estimated £216 extra a month in rent because of immigration levels since 2001. Across England that figure is approximately £132. Mass migration is making young people poorer.

People welcoming the 'candour' in Starmer's Observer interview. In it, he concedes he gave a major speech on immigration, the number one issue of concern to voters. But admits he hadn't properly read it, didn't believe it, didn't want to do it, and regrets delivering it.

This is all so low grade and embarrassing. The worst public sector thinking imaginable. Must all be reversed the moment a sensible government is elected again. thetimes.com/article/0590da…

You won't win people back with "messaging" on migration. That was the genius strategy the Tories employed while dismantling border control, and look where it got them. You need action to curb the inflow, and deal with the unwanted stock of recent arrivals.

šŸ˜ļøWhy is Britain's housing crisis so much worse than Europe's? We're 6.5 million homes short and the gap keeps growing. Listen to our new Head of Housing and InfrastructureĀ Ben Hopkinson explain how we got here and what it'll take to fix it.

Ben Hopkinson (@ben_a_hopkinson) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The UK is short 6.5 million homes compared to similar European countries. That’s more homes than Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have combined. Britain’s low growth, poor productivity, and high intergenerational inequality can all trace their roots to this huge shortage.🧵

Using Freedom of Information I've obtained new data on employments by nationality in each local authority. It's the only solid data on where migrants have moved to since 2021. It lets us estimate net migration to each area - & see how it's impacted rental costs & wages. 🧵

Fascinating data from Neil. Reinforces all the arguments made by him, Robert Jenrick & Karl Williams in their landmark Centre for Policy Studies paper - we have switched to an un-selective model of mass migration that does not do nearly enough to prioritise those who genuinely contribute

This is a great example of mind-forg'd manacles, people persuading themselves that small boat migration is unstoppable because they rule out in principle any and all of the actions that would stop small boat migration.

Have finally got round to reading the New Statesman's argument to raise taxes on the middle classes, and yes, it makes the utterly amateur mistake of leaving out pension contributions.
