We're green & gorgeous. We're dark & mysterious. We're pretty much the total package. Oh, and we're also home to the longest known cave in the whole wide world.

As you walk around the park you may see tulip poplar blooms on the ground. Tulip poplar trees are prevalent in this area and the logs from these trees were used as water pipes during the extraction of saltpeter from the cave during the War of 1812.

More historic trash found in the Mammoth Cave. Wrigley’s Spearmint gum was first introduced in 1893 and as the name implies, the gum is flavored with the spearmint plant.

Yet another piece of historic trash found in The Mammoth Cave. Believe or not, there was a time when cell phones didn’t exist and flash bulbs were used for hand held cameras. Below is the box for an old flash bulb. Many of the used bulbs can still be found throughout the cave.

Matchboxes from the past are found throughout the cave. Matches were used to light lanterns and for men to light their cigars, cigarettes and pipes. The Columbia Diamond Match Company was founded in 1881 by James Weaver an employee of the much larger Diamond Match Company.

If you venture out and about in the park you will hear the shrilling sounds of the Brood XIV cicada. Cicadas emerge every 13-17 years and the sound you hear is the male attracting females for breeding and reproduction. The female then lays their eggs in tree branches and shrubs.

National Pack Rat Day is observed annually on May 17th. It's a day to reflect on the tendency to collect and hoard items, or to celebrate the real pack rats (woodrats). The Allegheny woodrat (Neotoma magister) can sometimes be seen near cave entrances.

Yeah, we’re known as the longest cave in the world, but we have some pretty cool sites on the surface as well. Jack-in-the-pulpit(Arisaema triphyllum) at the historic entrance.

It’s that time of the year that fawns will be appearing in our park. Please adhere to speed limits and be on the lookout for these youngsters on our roads. If you are out hiking and see a fawn, please leave them alone, their mom is close by.
