This review demonstrates that many signaling pathways such as Wnt-Ctnnb1, Hippo, Pi3K-Akt, Rb-E2f or p53-Mdm2 are involved in the regulation of cell cycle re-entry and progression in adult mammalian cardiomyocytes. doi.org/10.1042/CS2021…

What is a crescent? An abnormal response of renal progenitors while trying to replace lost podocytes. Our new study shows reversal of crescents into podocytes is anyway possible and changes disease outcome science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

The crescent is a clonal lesion generated by expansion of a single progenitor cell reminding stem-cell mediated diseases of the bone marrow. Shown in our new study by lineage tracing of single renal progenitors science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Thrilled to share our recent work. Differentiation of crescent-forming kidney progenitor cells into podocytes attenuates severe glomerulonephritis in mice is now available on Science Translational Medicine, and it made the journal cover! Thanks to my mentors Paola Romagnani and Laura Lasagni!

8/ Melica, Paola Romagnani and colleagues found that parietal epithelial cells (PECs) are renal progenitor cells with similarities to the bone marrow stem cell niche. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

We just published detailed protocols for preparation of human kidney progenitor cultures and their differentiation into podocytes, a very useful tool for study their biology bio-protocol.org/e4757

Our new study is out! By STED microscopy on kidney biopsy and ELISA assays we show 1/3 of pediatric and half of adult patients (more in primary FSGS) have autoantibodies against slit antigens different from nephrin. i.e. anti-slit Abs kidney-international.org/action/showPdf…

Look how much more important is to know if a patient is genetic or has anti-slit antibodies than if has MCD or FSGS at kidney biopsy. We have finally come to the era of autoimmune, genetic and adaptive podocytopathies. No more MCD or FSGS used as diagnosis!
