My work using biophysical theory to understand the functional principles guiding the structure of neurons, validated using data from neuron images for species ranging from insects to whales, is finally published! You can read more about it here: nature.com/articles/s4159…

I am delighted to share that our paper "Ecological Stability Emerges at the Level of Strains in the Human Gut Microbiome" is now out at mBio! This work is with the very talented first author Richard Wolff @_rwolff and William Shoemaker Will Shoemaker🥭 journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb… (1/n)

Really fun collaboration with Devansh Pandey Vagheesh Narasimhan Mariana Harris ! We are able to detect selective sweeps in ancient DNA with a modified application of G12 that takes into account data sparsity. Multi-locus statistics hold much promise even for the most challenging data.

Excited to share that our paper on microbial source tracking using single nucleotide variants is officially out at Genome Biology! Thank you Nandita Garud and Eran Halperin. Check out the interesting patterns we find in the ocean microbiome and the NICU at genomebiology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…

Rapid recombination is an important driver of HIV intra-host evolution. Because recombination requires that multiple viruses co-infect a cell, Elena Romero and I wondered if high viral loads increase HIV's recombination rate. tl;dr: we think they do! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Don’t miss our featured article! By studying GWAS in admixed populations, we find that modeling heterogeneous effect sizes reduces power for SNPs with high MAF differences, but improves power when effect size differences by ancestry are larger than 60%. cell.com/ajhg/fulltext/…

Check out our work on the prevalence of hard sweeps on the X chromosome compared to autosomes across six Drosophila species!

With Hannah Gellert, Sam Church, Anton Suvorov, Dmitri Petrov and others, we use low-input (down to 30ng), single-insect Oxford Nanopore sequencing to help do 184 new genomes and address the near absence of genomic data for drosophilid species that cannot be cultured in the lab.

Excited to share the published version of this in Molecular Biology and Evolution! Elena Romero developed an approach to quantify recombination from longitudinal short read sequencing, and applied it to measure differences in recomb rate in HIV pops with low and high VL. academic.oup.com/mbe/article/41…

Super excited to see this out! Check out our work on detecting selective sweeps on aDNA, where we observe that many signals have been obscured due to admixture or drift.
