The fun isn’t extra. It’s not a waste of time. It’s a worthy investment so your time later isn’t wasted. Discussions will be better. Participation will be better. Class culture will be better. Because you laughed together. Plan for fun next week. And feel great about it. ❤️

Dove into #TQE today (as always, 🙏 Marisa Thompson!) with sophomores and tried something completely new: the poem "When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities" by Chen Chen Absolutely incredible poem + incredible #TQE start by students!

Look at that!! And it’s only September!! #TQE AND I LOVE that they wanted to share their thinking with their classmates. Win, win, all the wins.

Forever grateful to Marisa Thompson for sharing the TQE discussion method. I’ve adapted it to fit with scholarship on literary #literacies and it’s a central part of how I structure classroom discourse. Check out these Ss crush it! #TeamEnglish #elachat #engchat

Grading is communication. When we average grades over time, valuing early attempts evenly with later attempts, we communicate that where you start will control how successful you can be later. I can't think of a worse message for education to give to students.

Currently trying to explain to my 9 year old the difference between the popular vote & electoral vote. Going with “should the school choose a treat — pizza or ice cream — with every class getting a vote OR counting each student’s vote?” Also… bigger classes get more votes.

“Let’s each list 100 NBA players before the class ends” might be the purest, most wholesome and delightful note-passing I’ve ever intercepted from students during a work period. Prohibit cell phones and kids take it back to 1992

Grades are finalized. I asked students to write about what they think they were supposed to learn in 1301. Then we did an email to home adults. In each class, I wrote my own home adults and cc’d my students. I’ve written every assignment with them; I wasn’t going to stop today.
