People donโ€™t really understand what this number means or the magnitude of the loss caused by this gap. There simply is no area of American life that would not have been significantly improved if HBCUs had been fairly funded. This is not an exaggeration. 1/

The decision of UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees today to completely defund all Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Programs and turn the money over to the campus police has me reeling. It's time for all who can to commit to reverse this decision, by advocacy on campus & at the ballot box 1/n

We asked black students what they would like to see in curriculum that would better support them in their education and here are their answers. (thread ๐Ÿงต)

There are 24 hours in a day. For our jobs, some of us fit mentoring, teaching, service, outreach, research grant & paper writing, into a day. Others are only doing the research part. We are judged using the same metrics in merit/tenure, awards, and grant reviews. Time is finite.

The brainwashing of pedigree (where you went to college, how prestigious it was) is everywhere in academia. This has never been brought home further than when I lost a colleague (a good friend, veteran, and wonderful man) in January. 1/11

My "Race & Ethnicity" undergrads were curious why many of their white peers talked about race courses so unfavorably So we collected some data... #SocAF compass.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/soโ€ฆ

A ๐Ÿงต about women applying for things. Weโ€™ve run a postdoc seminar series for the past few years. Our selection is entirely anonymized. We read only the research statements. No CVโ€™s, no names, no lab references. But when all was revealed this year, 8/10 finalists were male.

After listening to the stories of several 1st yr grad students in academia, systematic changes needs to be done on the university's end to support incoming grad students financially in their critical first year of graduate school.

When reviewing grad school apps, I actively fight against the achievement counting as a solo metric. A good approach my mentor taught me is to ask "what did they do with the opportunity and resources they had" then look for the characteristics I would want in a grad student.
