New research shows that alkyl groups adjacent to cyclopropane in chair-like transition states preferred the axial orientation, an effect that grows more significant as alkyl groups get larger, contrary to expectations. chemistryworld.com/news/cycloprop…

An old #ChemEd #Chemistry summary of non-covalent interactions. This was aimed at UG chemists not experts. It is a foundation. It avoids the intricacies of this topic (I♥️Schreiner's work on dispersion forces & avoided discussing inductive effect of alkyl grps vs hyperconjugation

"... This revised position is not in conflict with experimental data, since alkyl group inductive effects are small and are likely to be masked by hyperconjugation/polarizability effects (particularly in charged species), and also by solvent effects." pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…

Interesting new research from Cardiff University which disputes the concept of alkyl groups donating electrons to other parts of a molecule. #Alevelchemistry cardiff.ac.uk/news/view/2882…. .

A new catalyst enables the selective production of hydrogen and acetic acid from ethanol, with no direct carbon dioxide emissions. The researchers believe the reaction could compete with current industrial processes, but some experts have doubts. chemistryworld.com/news/careful-c…

I was asked what America and Princeton University mean to me. With the University’s help we made a very short video, where I talk about Princeton and why all of our academic enterprises are so important to the US and to the world. As you can see, this is very personal for me.

In our latest paper, we find that different alkyl groups do not have different 'purely inductive' effects, and that differences in their electron-withdrawing/donating ability must be attributed to hyperconjugation/polarizability. pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…
