SHE DID IT AGAIN! Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, is back with a new partner and just laid yet another egg. At an approximate age of 74, the queen of seabirds returned to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge last week and began interacting with a male.

Catching up - a while ago, but a quality #Eyemouth seawatch on the way back from the Highlands, despite the blustery SWs.... 24 Little Auks (pic), Sooty Shearwater and more, here: northernrustic.blogspot.com/2024/12/eyemou… #SuperSeabirdSunday #BirdingScotland

#Nocmig update! After moving to suburban York recently, my expectations for recording nocturnal bird migration over our sleeping heads were naturally much lower, but I've been pleasantly surprised - it's been an entertaining autumn, summarised here: northernrustic.blogspot.com/2024/12/nogmig…

Spot the #Hull #Gannet (easier if you're on board the docked ferry!) - one of 20 we had - as well as seven Little Auks, from incidental obs 1130-1445 at Saltend while conducting other surveys. We're well upstream here, so it was pleasing to get some stormy seabird action...

This is why the hunting ban on Turtle Doves in France, Spain and Portugal is so important for birds breeding in the UK. Just look at their route down to sub-Saharan Africa each autumn (returning by the same route in the spring). migrationatlas.org/node/1648

For all you good people who coughed up over 5K in the spring, for my half-marathon for Jean Thorpe Wildlife Rescue: Jean's aviaries now have full electrics, heating, lighting and CCTV throughout (plus a new freezer)! So grateful to so many lovely folk. THANK YOU! 😍🙏🦉🦅

Cryptic, charismatic & characterful, Jack Snipe are hard to beat - seven in my Wold Ecology survey area today (all in a small, muddy industrial area by Hull docks) were a real treat. All sat tight and gave me the thousand yard stare, unlike their cowardly common cousins....
