The word ‘unique’ is overused but it applies to BBC Singers Their ability to assimilate a composer’s voice & turn it into glorious sound is unmatched. From new commissions to light music, they make it all sound effortless. Another day of sad news for classical music in the UK.

A rare morning of hope for the future. Thank you so much to the children and staff of St Joseph's Catholic Primary School for your commitment to the performances of Carmen at English National Opera and for the wonderful performance this morning. If we have inspired you, know that you have inspired us too.

Well said, Sir John Eliot Gardiner on BBC Radio 4 this morning. @bbc says the cuts are part of a ‘plan that prioritises quality, agility and impact.’ When is this plan to be shared with the music community? We will lose BBCSingers a world class organisation. Let us see the plan.

Good news about BBC Singers reprieve. But as with English National Opera this is a temporary solution. There is more to be done to secure their long term survival. I think meaningful consultation suggests a long discussion taking views from a wide range of people. Don’t you agree Arts Council England ?

This is @jen_wilson77 Wardrobe show manager English National Opera .A cover went on yesterday & while the show was going on Jen was quickly moving buttons & adding tabs to costumes to aid the singer’s performance. Part of her job, you might say, but her skill would be missed if she weren’t there

I echo every comment about the excellence of the coronation music but let us also not forget the coordination complexities involved. That Pappano and Nethsingha kept it as tight as they did without sacrificing the musical quality was nothing short of miraculous. Immense respect.

A highly impressive performance of ‘Music Makes Me’ by @TBMHMusic tonight at Royal Albert Hall involving over 1000 children. But the talk is about reducing the number of music hubs? As with the opera cuts no-one thinks this will improve access or standards in music education. Why?

Very sorry to hear of the death of Graham Clark. A character tenor of the very highest level who throughout his long career never gave an uncommitted performance. He was a wonderful person to have in a cast, equally good value off-stage as he was on. RIP

Wishing Dame Janet Baker a very happy 90th birthday. A consummate artist in many languages but her ability to articulate the English language without losing the beauty of line- whether the composer be Handel, Holst, Elgar or Britten- is unrivalled. We can all learn from her.

Bullying is everywhere. If you’re a conductor, NHS manager or US president, there are times when you have the power to make people do things they don’t wish to do. How you use that power tells us about you as a person. It seldom ends with a punch so it rarely gets called out.

Wow! What a prom that was last night. Bravo to everyone involved but especially BBC Singers - such effortless precision, bravura diction & pristine tuning. I’ve said it before, but it’s worth reiterating: this is a unique organisation that deserves to be celebrated & cherished.

If you are near the London Coliseum this evening, you could do worse than get a ticket to see one of the future stars of British opera give his debut performance in one of the pivotal roles of British opera. John Finden as Peter Grimes English National Opera

RIP Jane Bonner. Integral to the special atmosphere Opera North has always had, she made you feel welcome whether you were a star singer or a novice stagehand. Her love for the company & opera in general (except Turandot!) was immense. A lovely person who will be much missed.

I question any collective definitions of excellence- we should be able to make up our own mind. I may disagree with someone else’s view, but it often makes me revisit my own. Definitions of excellence should be fluid and remain open to different approaches, even traditional ones.

How relevant is Mozart’s Magic Flute? I can think of no better work - especially in Simon McBurney’s all-encompassing production - that embodies the varied emotions the English National Opera orchestra, chorus and music staff are experiencing today. Their pride in their work is deeply humbling.

RIP Richard Sherman. Composer of Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Jungle Book among others, his artistry, combined with his brother’s lyrics, was deceptive. Beautifully constructed, seeming simple yet instantly memorable, his best songs are among the very best ever.

‘What we have loved, others will love, and we will teach them how’. Appropriate words for the celebration of David Swinson tonight. David, thank you for inspiring a generation - you are a fantastic advocate, encouraging young people to experience and enjoy all kinds of music.

Very sad to hear of the death of Elgar Howarth. ‘Gary’ was not only a skilled conductor of so-called difficult music, he was a fine composer and a gifted trumpeter. A plain-speaking man, he was also an empathetic musician who could effortlessly reveal a new piece’s meaning. #RIP
