I sometimes see a big hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) and I sometimes see a big hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana). But I rarely see them side-by-side. That Ostrya is especially chonk! #thicktrunkthursday #Betulaceae #iamabotanist

Okay, gang. Are we ready for a little #PlantsGiving action? A social media tradition since 2018: counting & reporting out the number of plant species consumed during your Thursday dinner. Here, *Sky*, IG, FB, wherever works. #iamabotanist #bisonflowers

Shoutout Mark Haussmann for letting our Field Botany class survey tree/shrub recruitment in his backyard: an oak-hickory forest infested by spongy moth (Lymantria dispar). Second pic shows spongy moth egg casings on the bark of a chestnut oak. #BisonFlowers Chris Martine | Plants are Cool, Too!

Great final trip in Field Botany to Dries Orchards! Got an inside scoop about all things apples — how they are grown, harvested, sorted, packaged, or processed into cider! And also discussed challenges with harvests due to disease and climate change. #BisonFlowers Chris Martine | Plants are Cool, Too!

Last Field Botany trip of the semester: Dries Orchards, where we learned about how apples are grown, harvested, processed, and sold... and turned into both sweet and hard cider. #bisonflowers #iamabotanist

Wrapped my section of BIOL 201: Bio Inquiries & Observations w/ a focus on history of species "discovery" helped along by Richard Conniff's excellent #SpeciesSeekers book. 15/16 students finishing their 1st semester at #Bucknell, although a bunch still have a Chem exam tonight.
