Blackpool gearing up for the greatest annual event in the English cultural calendar - in what remains England's most fascinating, magical town. I'd take a tram trip along the illuminations over a visit to any of London's bloviated cultural institutions. theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/a…

Terrific idea (what were Turn Of The Screw's Quint & Jessell like when alive?) very haphazardly treated, awkwardly acted and directed. Exactly the sort of unsuccessful movie crying out to be remade by more simpatico talents. (Haunting of Bly Manor tries same thing but is worse!)

Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde (of course). Followed by very underrated To The Devil A Daughter. Fear In The Night is Ok-ish.... Straight On Till Morning is a pretty bad movie but has faint ghost of a good one in it somewhere. Scars = poor. Horror of F probably their worst movie ever.

Wonderful film - one of the best American pictures of the 21st century though few have even heard of it. Wonderful, terrifying script (Mamet may be a deeply unpleasant person, but Hell he can write) - the role Macy was born to play. The best horror film Stuart Gordon ever made.

I saw Jaws (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) in IMAX at The Grove here in LA at 9 AM this morning & left feeling totally, utterly dejected. Almost in tears. Tears over the fact that 50 years after Steven Spielberg nearly touched God, it’s unlikely anyone will come this close to this level of

Terrific film, far superior to the stagy Wait Until Dark. The central set piece (prior to this clip) where Farrow spends a whole day wandering about the house literally blind to the fact that her loved ones are lying dead all around her is a masterclass in the cinematic macabre.

I know this is going to sound really snobbish, but when people say their top 10 films and it only includes American movies or movies from the last 20 years, I get sad. There is a whole world of cinema out there. Why limit yourself to one flavour?

As Eisenhower warned: When the military grows beyond a certain share of a nation's economy, a perverse incentive develops: to keep wars going and start new ones in the name of profit. News link below:

Good was never good. Evil was never evil. What our presentism dubiously dubs "postmodern" was with us too in antiquity. Just read Aeschylus alone.

Rather wonderful to see Disney's ostensibly family friendly The Black Hole now routinely showing in Late Night Horror slots, in this case double-billed with The Vampires Night Orgy.
