Sedge heaven at #wildflowerhour at Eycott Hill CumbriaWildlifeTrust with the BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland #Cumbria Group. Bog Sedge, Carex limosa. Strong NW British distribution but endangered in England plantatlas2020.org/atlas/2cd4p9h.… Doing very well at this excellent site where conditions are just right

Sedge heaven. Love it when there are strong links between common & #botanical names. The local rarity, near-threatened (Eng) & rather wonderful Few-flowered Sedge, Carex pauciflora. #wildflowerhour at Eycott Hill with the BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland #Cumbria group. Lake District

Sedge heaven for #wildflowerhour at Eycott Hill with the BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland #Cumbria group. White Sedge, Carex canescens. A very pale sedge (#WhiteForms) but now datker this late in the season. A characteristic sedge of both upland mires and lowland bogs. plantatlas2020.org/atlas/2cd4p9h.…

Sedge Heaven with the BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland #Cumbria group for #wildflowerhour at Eycott Hill. An example where the common name is confusing at best. Lesser Tussock-sedge, Carex diandra. It grows from rhizomes and doesn't form tussocks. Found on wet, peaty soils - range of pH (Vu - Eng).

Still going, even after the frost and snow. This little plant is tough 🌱💪 (it can even grow on polluted mining spoil). The Nationally Scarce, and quite wonderful, Spring Sandwort, Sabulina verna for #wildflowerhour at Arnside Knott, #Cumbria NT Arnside and Silverdale @ArnsideSilverNL

1. And so the #Roanhead Lodge Resort comes back for a second go. See previous 🧵for a summary of ecological issues with the original application. So what's changed this time around? Save Roanhead #SaveRoanhead NT Sandscale Haws NNR Read on...

Dune slacks are on of the coolest, and most underappreciated, habitats in the UK. Natterjack Toads, incredibly rare plants, bryophytes, dragonflies, beetles and all sorts of other incredible wildlife 💚💚💚 #WorldWetlandsDay #Nature #NatureEmergency Save Roanhead #SaveRoanhead

WWT ipbes Wetlands International Convention on Wetlands Wetlands International Europe UN Environment Programme UN Biodiversity FAO Climate Change & Biodiversity The Wetlands Initiative USGSWetlands The Climate Coalition And dune slacks. Don't forget the dune slacks 😁

This is WRONG!! 🤬Your proposal will WIPE OUT natterjack toads and your mitigation strategy is dangerous Roanhead Resort! We're counting on Westmorland and Furness Council to say NO 🛑 - 1 of 4

Cracking afternoons birding at NT Sandscale Haws NNR yesterday. 3,000+ waders feeding on the mudflats & 750+ Eider, Short-eared Owl & Barn Owl in the dunes. Just several thousand reasons why it's essential that we #SaveRoanhead Westmorland and Furness Council ? Save Roanhead app.bto.org/birdtrack/pubc…

1 - NT Sandscale Haws NNR and #Roanhead host one of the most important remaining Natterjack Road populations in the uk. 2 - Prof Beebee has reviewed the developers "mitigation proposal." He highlights serious flaws & misunderstandings in this document. 📃can be read on Save Roanhead

7. So over to you Westmorland and Furness Council . We are in a #NatureEmergency & a #ClimateEmergency . We have no chance of dealing with either if we don't actually protect our "protected" sites and species from damaging developments.

8. As an alternative there is huge potential to restore habitats across the Roanhead site to help save species and to protect & buffer the designated areas. This could also provide sustainable income for the owners. Westmorland and Furness Council #SaveRoanhead Save Roanhead

The only genuinely early flowering (as opposed to year-round flowering) species that we found at NT Sandscale Haws NNR yesterday - Common Whitlowgrass, Erophila Verna. #WildflowerHour with Lindsay Maskell at NT Sandscale Haws NNR

Lots of Bee Orchid rosettes at NT Sandscale Haws NNR , #Cumbria so could be a good year for them. I love the ecology of this species in the northern parts of its range. Flowers mimic bees but then reproduce by self-pollination. #WildflowerHour With Lindsay Maskell

The (twice) wonderfully named Rue-leaved Saxifrage, Saxifraga tridactylites. #SignsOfSpring for #WildflowerHour , although it's actually been in flower since mid-December on some local sites 😁 plantatlas2020.org/atlas/2cd4p9h.… NT Arnside and Silverdale @ArnsideSilverNL

Myosotis strica (Upright Forget-me-not) at it's only current UK site, NT Sandscale Haws NNR . See linked🧵for the account of it's rediscovery after an absence of over 100 years. I found 79 plants today (think this is the highest recent count) #WildflowerHour BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland Save Roanhead
