I strongly recommend this remarkable book of Letters for those who are struggling in their chosen career of medicine. It may be one of the last collections of epistolary exchanges by a well known writer Brain Masud Husain Oliver Sacks Fdn. academic.oup.com/brain/article-…

Ever wondered what "brain fog" really is? Is it a symptom, syndrome, or something else entirely? And why is it mentioned in so many different conditions? Check out this new review on Trends in Neuroscience! #BrainFog (Very glad to be involved.)

Anyone who conducts clinical trials in the UK will be unsurprised by this. Although we have fantastic colleagues in Trust R&D departments and the RDNs, the NHS is so flattened and clinicians so demoralised, that it has become difficult to do more than data-based research.

Robert Howard It isn’t just general NHS issues. Its expanding bureaucracy,a lack of urgency in unis/NHS, & risk aversion causing delays of yrs. Problems haven’t grown from funding issues, but misplaced incentives where its ok if we never get started as long as the proformas completed correctly

Delighted our (Jon Roiser 🟣 Robert Howard anette schrag Yumeya Yamamori Karel Kieslich) paper is now out in Brain! 🎉 We show that #Parkinson's #depression may stem from a reduction in reward sensitivity that is unresponsive to dopaminergic medication: 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/brain/… 🧵⬇️

This is a massive honour for me and my team. Thank you PNASNews. Jakob, Ruby and Mateusz were especially amazing in making this happen. And delivering a really cool #translational #neuroimmunology paper which has both basic and clinically applied impact.

The unparalleled XJ Wang has written a book about the computations underlying cognition. I read a draft version and it is awesome. He is not on social media, so I am sharing it on his behalf :)

Thank goodness people are waking up to the fact that there is a crisis for clinical research in the UK Financial Times High on the list are the bureaucratic processes that have become such an obstacle to getting things done

“We don’t need any more reports on why the UK is failing. We just need to get back to doing what we once did well, and that requires the courage to dismantle the costly bureaucracies we have created” bmj.com/content/388/bm… Masud Husain The BMJ

There is a crisis in clinical academia in the UK. The UKs role as a international clinical science powerhouse, and the resulting huge contribution to the UK economy, is under threat. Urgent reform is needed Encouraging that major newspapers are picking up on this problem

At University of Oxford it's time for the staff survey. Here's my answer to: "What is the main thing the University could do to help you to progress your career?" Please RT and respond similarly to the survey if you agree. It's the only way to get our points across!

If you happen to be in central Oxford on Sat 5th April and you're interested in the relationship between brains and selves, I'm speaking at the OxfordLitFest

Needless bureaucracy and “bullshit jobs” are preventing academics from fulfilling their core creative responsibilities and making clinical research an “impossible task”, a leading neuroscientist has warned. Paddy Jack reports timeshighereducation.com/news/mountain-…

It’s rewarding to see the neuroscience community recognize the impact of our findings on the SCAN which are featured in this elegant scientific commentary in Brain. doi.org/10.1093/brain/…
