How is 𝘗. 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮 SO GOOD at evading host immunity? In our new preprint, we use ultra-long Oxford Nanopore reads to discover extra-chromosomal alleles of antigenic 𝘷𝘢𝘳 genes in clonal malaria parasites, Bernard Kim👑 Egan Lab Dmitri Petrov bit.ly/3Hy1nAD

📣 📣 📣 The shock of my day: Over the last few days, I measured power consumption of our -80°C freezers CECAD Cologne . ~13 kWh per day each 🤔So, one freezer consumes much more electricity per year than my family and me🙁

Flying back from grc.org/molecular-mech… - incredibly grateful and reenergized. One of the best conferences in terms of science, intellectual engagement, and conversation I ever attended. Thank you to all but especially to Olivier Tenaillon and Judith Berman 💔 for organizing!

With Hannah Gellert, Sam Church, Anton Suvorov, Dmitri Petrov and others, we use low-input (down to 30ng), single-insect Oxford Nanopore sequencing to help do 184 new genomes and address the near absence of genomic data for drosophilid species that cannot be cultured in the lab.

Very happy and proud about this project, where we are and where we are headed. Truly amazing work by Bernard Kim and everyone involved. Huge kudos to all! 1/n

I am happy to share our new preprint, "Bayesian inference of relative fitness on high-throughput pooled competition assays," with Madhav Mani and Dmitri Petrov! A short 🧵... biorxiv.org/content/10.110… (option to read it as HTML here: mrazomej.github.io/bayesian_fitne…)

This is not a milestone for animal welfare. EU leaders, led by Stella Kyriakides and Maroš Šefčovič🇪🇺, promised to overhaul the bloc's farm animal welfare rules. Their scientific panel agreed. So did >80% of Europeans. Then industry lobbied them ... and we're left with this.
