Our new paper published in #PLOSBiology examines #kelp blue carbon transformation across the northern hemisphere. We find faster decomposition with warmer sea temperature. An incredible replicated field experiment by 15 groups! plos.io/3QnzBJY Havforskningsinstituttet UWA Research

Thanks for the research highlight! Always an amazing experience getting to work out of Bamfield MSC!

Just back from an awesome day of diving conducting biodiversity surveys in the broken group for Dr. Julia K. Baum with Siobhan. Now time to put my feet up and relax at Bamfield MSC for the evening before doing it all again tomorrow!

A beautiful first day of Dr. Julia K. Baum kelp and eelgrass surveys with cedar coast field station in the traditional territories of the Ahousaht FN FN. Amazing to have Gemma and Ayumi from the Maaqutusiis Hahoulthee Stewardship Society with us this #phycologyfriday to check out our ROVs and methods!

Had a fantastic time at cedar coast field station in Clayoquot Sound (Ahousaht FN, Hesquiaht and Tla-o-qui-aht territory) sampling #kelp forests in BC Parks with @Scuba_Timmer and Matt Csordas. #VancouverIsland never ceases to amaze me. Dr. Julia K. Baum @cneufeld5

Two outstanding mornings of kelp surveys at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve with @cneufeld5 Matt Csordas @Scuba_Timmer Wonderful to reconnect with Chris and to meet Matt & Brian - thank you all for sharing your wisdom and including Pearson College UWC students đź’™

We have a new study on Pycnopodia predation on purple sea urchins! Our lab experiment and model finds that the recovery of #SunflowerSeaStars will be key in #kelp forest restoration. w/ Dr. Sarah Gravem @DanielKOkamoto et al, University of Oregon Oregon State University The Nature Conservancy in California royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

Behold the new northern limit of Sea Palm, #Postelsia! This #kelp was long assumed to peter out at Hope Island, BC… but now found 50km north at Cranston Point, almost (but not) to Calvert Island & Hakai Institute. Will ocean warming push it farther north? We are watching! 👀

Join our team! We're hiring a full-time Research Assistant to help with our kelp restoration and blue carbon research in partnership with The Kelp Rescue Initiative and bluecarboncanada.ca Job ad posted here: juliakbaum.org/join-us Pls RT #ecosystemrestoration #naturalclimatesolutions

What is the status of #kelp forests on the west coast of Canada? In our new OA collaborative Marine Ecology Progress Series (MEPS) paper, we show that it varies both a lot across the province. Some regions have seen large declines (but with refugia), others are very stable. int-res.com/abstracts/meps…
