Great thread. I gave infacol and ranitidine to my firstborn. But I made sure to tell her she didn’t need it as I did so

High lactate you say? My favourite mnemonic: LACTATES Liver failure Anaerobic respiration Congenital inborn errors of metabolism Toxins Accelerated glycolysis Thiamine deficiency Environment of alkalosis Sepsis … it’s normal to have a fav mnemonic, right?

As a parent and a paediatrician, I was moved to tears listening to Rhiannon Davies’ interview on BBC Radio 4 this morning. Her incredible determination in the face of personal tragedy, which led to the #ockendenreport, is truly inspiring. I hope it leads to the change she deserves

When chasing results for tests requested in clinic, how long is it reasonable to give patients (their parents really) to have booked their blood tests? And if they don’t come, is it fair to expect me to chase them all individually? What’s everyone else doing?

Services that don’t accept referral letters, that include all the required information, just because they’re not on that service’s specific pro forma are, in fact, the worst

Just found my revision notes from way back when, pre MRCPCH parts 1&2 Even though I’ve written about them, I genuinely feel like I’ve never heard of some of the syndromes on the page. Which begs the question, was there any point learning about them early in training?

To gen paeds trainees developing special interests: be sure to maintain good relationships with colleagues you meet in that speciality. They’re invaluable as a consultant to help you offer effective care locally to patients and prevent (some) referrals #integratedcare Jelena

A colleague is buying ladybirds to kill the aphids on the plants in our office. But what will we get to kill the inevitable ladybird infestation… and how high up the food chain might this end up?!

Having seen (or maybe it’s recognised?) almost no cases of it through training, I’ve now had 5 patients with urticarial vasculitis in the last year. Interested to know if anyone else has noticed a trend? #paediatrics #dermatology

Google translate for clinic letters when you know the family cannot speak or read English… yay or nay? The family deserve correspondence they can read. Does anyone have a better alternative service?

I’m cycling from London to Paris in May to raise money for Duchenne UK, a charity founded by my cousin after her son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy 10 years ago. As you can see, I’ve got ALL the latest kit. Any donations greatly received justgiving.com/fundraising/ma…

So I’ll be stepping down as the neonatal night SHO covering the strike. My ā€˜registrar’ will be a fellow stepping down consultant. But the consultant on call is…. Me Who’s calling who for help?

Obligatory consultant holds SHO bleep picture. But seriously, has anyone worked out which button does what since I stopped holding these? Night shift going well… #steppingdown #supportjuniordoctors

Made it to Paris! 300km in 24hrs. A big challenge, but nothing compared to what boys with Duchenne and their families face every day. If anyone else would like to contribute and support #DuchenneUK that would be fantastic justgiving.com/fundraising/ma…
