If we checked when Medway Council’s staff were working from home - we are confident it would show hundreds of employees working outside of their contracted hours. Answering emails at 8pm. We know council staff give up their Christmas Days to open up sports centres for showers.

Today we proudly raised the Red Ensign to mark Merchant Navy Day. We honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Merchant Navy, past and present, whose service has kept our nation supplied in peace and in war.

Flags matter to us - and we will always be proud our nation, our culture and our heritage. But we will only tolerate symbols of these things being used to knit our community together, not tear it apart.
