As it's #WomenInScience Day, this throwback to collecting corals with my colleague Sara Campana seems apt! We used these fragments in our sponge experiment, all in the name of sponge science. SpongeLoop #ThrowbackThursday #SpongeTwitter

Our latest research on sponge symbiosis has been published with Springer Nature in Microbiome! We found that microbial symbionts act as mini waste-recyclers within sponges, helping their host to retain important nutrients. IBED marine biologists Meggie Hudspith, Jasper de Goeij @Porifarma, Gerard @muyzer and colleagues were able to visualize for the first time how tropical sponges and their symbiotic bacteria together consume food! Read more about their Microbiome paper: ibed.uva.nl/content/news/2…

Check out our newest paper on partitioning DOM uptake in #sponges! In sponges with few microbial symbionts, host cells drive DOM uptake, while microbes mop up waste products SpongeLoop @JoelleSprong Laura Rix x.com/MEPS_IR/status…
