This year, we uncovered a pestle-shaped lithic among Mesolithic tree roots at Bouldnor Clif, off the Isle of Wight. While most of the finds the site are flint, this tool is made of a rough green stone, which shows signs of grinding on one end. Stay tuned as research continues!

We are finds sorting again on Sunday mornings, still working through material from our Mesolithic shell midden dig of 2023. We are about two thirds of the way through washing and sorting our samples, so should get finished this winter!

This elm leaf from Windy Harbour, Lancashire 🇬🇧 is 6000 years old! #LancashireDay It is a rarely preserved indicator of the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in England, as the arrival of farming in Britain corresponded with the decline of the elm tree. 🆓 buff.ly/3Vb4oxN

A great day yesterday with the writer James Canton looking at a 10,000 year old Mesolithic lake eroding onto the beach at Skipsea in North Yorkshire. Research for his new book. The lake deposits have a Bronze Age beaver dam overlying it.

Sharp eyed Carol found this lovely cowrie shell bead while finds sorting from our Mesolithic shell midden dig last Sunday. It is similar to the one we found before but smaller and the holes are neater. Amazing to think someone was probably wearing this over 6000 years ago!
