What's down to the personal performance of the manager & what's down to system & policy? You've got to be able to value a manager in a struggling trust who's cutting deficits, keeping more staff & safeguarding care. Gov too blurry on this. Accountability requires clarity

Darzi said even the best managers in the world wouldn't have been able to turn around the last decade and a half of poor performance. This was down to disastrous government reforms. Let's not lose this narrative.

We need to hear more about how the SoS will support good managers, e.g. with stable structures, steamlined process & careful targets, and how he'll make NHS management an attractive career. Will have much more impact on performance than a sole focus on removing rotten apples.
