First days of an expedition supported by Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Society. We are sailing towards the Western Antarctic Peninsula to explore the cascading impacts of climate change on the seafloor.

Our first field campaign off western Antarctica, where Adelie penguins have kept us company. We sampled the water column and collected video footage of the seafloor to quantify the extent and drivers of submarine groundwater discharge. Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Society MBARI

We deploy an ad hoc instrument along transects, which allows us to identify seeps in real-time and collect targeted water samples with a Niskin bottle. Back at the lab, the samples will be analysed for major elements and stable isotopes. Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Society MBARI

The M199 cruise is over and we're en route back to port. A heartfelt thanks to colleagues from CEN Uni Hamburg @cenunihh.bsky.social, OGS, and the Universities of Milano-Bicocca, Trieste, and Malta for their exceptional support. We are excited to share our discoveries with you soon! MBARI
