We have received >100 abstracts for the 2nd International Conference on Seafloor Landforms, Processes, and Evolution (icslpe.com). However, some colleagues have asked to extend the abstract deadline. We will therefore accept abstracts until 15 January 2024.

First days of an expedition supported by Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Society. We are sailing towards the Western Antarctic Peninsula to explore the cascading impacts of climate change on the seafloor.

Our first field campaign off western Antarctica, where Adelie penguins have kept us company. We sampled the water column and collected video footage of the seafloor to quantify the extent and drivers of submarine groundwater discharge. Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Society MBARI

The Western Antarctic Peninsula is undergoing the most pronounced warming in the southern hemisphere. Since it hosts a range of fluids in various phases, the impact of warming on its seafloor is expected to be complex, with implications for morphology and benthic ecosystems.

We deploy an ad hoc instrument along transects, which allows us to identify seeps in real-time and collect targeted water samples with a Niskin bottle. Back at the lab, the samples will be analysed for major elements and stable isotopes. Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Society MBARI

The M199 (DELUGE) expedition aboard the R/V Meteor is underway! For the next two weeks, we'll be exploring the seafloor offshore SE Sicily in search of buried erosional and depositional markers from the Zanclean megaflood. Stay tuned for updates! MBARI

To map the erosional and depositional landforms linked to the Zanclean megaflood, nowadays buried offshore of SE Sicily, we are using a Sparker source and 600 m long streamer that is provided and deployed by Prof. Dr Christian Huebscher and his team at the University of Hamburg.

Noto Canyon is a strange looking canyon SE of Sicily. It is thought to have formed by the passage of the Zanclean flood from the western to the eastern Mediterranean. To test this hypothesis, we are mapping exposed and buried sections of Noto Canyon in unprecedented detail.
