This working class woman, after 40 years in the Labour Party, was disciplined & banned by them from standing for County Council. Because she spoke out about the Winter Fuel Allowance. She resigned. Today she took the seat from the Labour Group Leader ✊

An interesting result from Bedwardine ward in Worcestershire which people may have missed. Former Cons MP Alan Amos beat former Cons MP Stephen Dorrell. Both now have new parties.

Reform UK seem to forget it's LOCAL government, but seem to be interfering even more than Labour do these days. Shouldn't local councils decide what flags they fly, not party HQ? Now I hear Notts Reform unable to pick council leader today cos no national official was present.

Sunday Times today says that Jonathan Pochin, husband of new Reform MP Sarah Pochin, is "a construction worker". Up to point... Jonathan Pochin used to be a director of his family's well-known Pochin building firm, which went out of business a few years ago.

How is publication of the British General Election of 2024 getting on? When can we expect it? David Butler, who co-edited every book in the series from 1951 to 2005 - 15 in all - had a rule they had to be published in the year of the election.

Tom Fletcher's speech last night to the UN Security Council will go down as one of the great historic speeches of our times. Top marks to the BBC and the editor of R4 PM for having the initiative & courage to run all 12 minutes at the top of the PM programme this evening.

Andrew Norfolk was an outstanding journalist who explored and exposed the grooming gangs scandal when others feared to do so. He will go down as one of the all-time greats.

This account by Rupert Lowe is appalling, if true. A gross over-reaction by the police. Perhaps these armed police officers should be prosecuted themselves... for wasting police time.

⚽️🏆 As Manchester City and Crystal Palace prepare to take to the pitch at Wembley Stadium today, we’re remembering Alexander ‘Sandy’ Turnbull. A star forward for today’s finalists Manchester City and FA Cup winner in 1904, Sandy was one of the first professional footballers to enlist

Duncan gave me my first break in journalism, taking me on to do occasional pieces for City Limits when I was at university in the early 80s. I remember how he'd take my copy and turn it into something so much better on his typewriter. Always with a wry piece of advice and a smile

Broadcasters should not use jargon phrases such as "read-out". Such terms are baffling to the vast majority of viewers & listeners - & probably to quite a few journalists. They give the impression that senior journalists are part of an elite club with its own language.

Congratulations to Lord (David) Hunt, who was 83 on Wednesday. First elected an MP nearly 50 years ago, and a Cabinet minister under Thatcher (briefly) & Major, Lord Hunt is the oldest member of Kemi Badenoch's front bench team, as shadow business & trade minister.

#MUFC have completely outplayed and comfortably beaten Champions League quarter-finalists Aston Villa with an impressive display. Certainly offers hope for the future, but also the nagging regret they didn’t do this in Bilbao last week.
