Great piece on The New York Times on #AI #Bias. Particularly this quote by Olga Russakovsky: "There 3 root causes of bias in #ArtificialIntelligence systems. The first one is bias in the #data (...). The second root cause of bias…lnkd.in/g9qp8N2 lnkd.in/gx2D_6r

Very happy to have had the chance to write about some light-related Nobel prizes for a Perspective in Advanced Photonics. dx.doi.org/10.1117/1.AP.2… There's a nice poster you can download as well! SPIE

This comic reminded me of when my mom asked me how many hours I work a day...I had no idea what to answer. Reading a paper in bed count as working?

Sad news about Mark! It's a huge loss not only to the #plasmonics #nanooptics community but also the wider #photonics community! Where to get those tricky (but very constructive) questions now at conferences?

🌎 Three pioneer climate scientists, one of whom calculated the greenhouse effect of Carbon Dioxide 164 years ago! A fascinating @BBCIdeas film. #climatechange #science #WomenInScience

In the next few weeks I'll be sharing some of the wisdom of an incredible mentor- my father. Here is #1 :" Try to make an impact on science or on technology. Make sure not to be in-between, doing neither. "

10 days ago my father, Prof. Raymond Fox (later Reuven Opher), has left us. The world has lost an inspiring, brilliant, caring man. He was one of Technion Physics Dept, founders in Israel (2nd top left) and later joined the Univ. of Sao Paulo (IAG), Brazil

(1/2)When writing references for a female, let's be mindful of implicit bias. Emphasize actual accomplishments as opposed to general adjectives describing effort and desire to succeed. I personally see a lot of: she is a “go-getter”, “trendsetter”, “ambitious” “enthusiastic”.

Michal Lipson (@michallipson) 's Twitter Profile Photo

(2/2): I also see a lot of:” she has a lot of potential”, she is a “rising star” (for a senior PI), as well as “I have mentored her ”, “I encouraged her” , etc. I almost never see those in letters for male scientists/engineers.

Voyant Photonics is hiring for several positions: voyantphotonics.com/careers/ . We aim to revolutionize 3D LIDAR, shrinking it down onto a silicon chip and enabling a future of ubiquitous chip-scale active sensing using silicon photonics. Check it out!

(1/1) In honor of my father-the best mentor in the world- here are tips for for faculty interviewing. when asked with whom you could collaborate, go as broad as possible. Mention faculty that are also outside your area and explain how their research is connected to yours.

Michal Lipson (@michallipson) 's Twitter Profile Photo

(2/2) Note: faculty from outside the department usually do not really count as much as potential future collaborators since they do not get to make the final hiring decision

“You should be careful being so energetic and confident while giving a talk because people might think you are not professional”. Are men ever approached and told this after they give a talk?
