Talk of 2wk lockdown unhelpful. Would only delay case increases by 1-2wks at best. Lockdown acceptable ONLY if part of Strategy👇 to get us out of #COVID19. Then it is worth the pain. Insist on authorities to adopt elimination strategy, not half-measures. zerocovidlb.wordpress.com/a-national-str…

Lebanon’s response as well. Here are the unpleasant truths: 1. The vaccine is not the magic bullet that will solve everything 2. We can’t get rid of COVID without a strict lockdown of more than 2 weeks 3. Healthcare workers are NOT okay!!! 4. Partying kills. Sorry not sorry!

1/5 In today’s discussion with the Economic and Social Council on the lockdown, one could not but wonder what was more worrying, the status of the economy and workforce, or the Covid numbers. Yet, it is not, as some suggested, a choice between death from hunger or from Covid.

2/5 Covid is rampant in the community, as attested by a high test positivity rate. 50% of patients carrying the infection are without symptoms, and unknowingly spreading the virus. Some are even super-spreaders. The desired increase in economic activity will further the spread.

3/5 It is wishful to think that tourism, shopping, and dining out will continue unaffected despite rising numbers of hospitalized and dead Covid patients. A worsening pandemic will eventually cripple the economy as people go into voluntary isolation. The economic cycle will slow.

4/5 A viable economy cannot coexist with a rampant virus even with enough ICU beds. The statistics and examples from other countries are clear. Unrestricted virus spread can be overwhelming. Hence, Covid numbers have to come down as a precursor for the economy to rebound.

5/5 But, business, already battered, are right to ask for financial assistance, as offered by other countries. Supporting businesses is part of a good health policy. Poverty does help Covid spread. Fighting Covid and reviving the economy go hand in hand. Just look east.

To succeed on #COVID19, #Lebanon needs: 1. #ZeroCovid strategy. - We made it✅... get govt. to adopt it. 2. Effective Leadership. - Don't have it❌... committees, PM, ministers, govt. - Responsibility too divided. - Need specialized multi-discp. Team&Maestro.
