30% or nearly 8,500 of the Duke of Wellington’s 28,000 British soldiers, including Wellington himself, were Irish. Based on a casualty rate of 25% it can be ascertained that roughly 2,000 Irishmen were killed or wounded at the Battle of Waterloo #Ireland #History Ronan McGreevy

#OnThisDay 1798 Fr. John Murphy, the leader of the Wexford rebels, was stripped, flogged, hanged, decapitated, his corpse burnt in a barrel of tar & his head impaled on a spike. This was meant to be a warning to all others who fought against the British Crown. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1863 The Irish Brigade fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. Lead by Galway born Colonel Patrick Kelly, the already much depleted brigade lost 198 of 532 troops engaged, or 37% of total soldiers, but still held their ground at the Wheatfield. #Ireland #History

A very happy birthday to Vladimir Ashkenazy, beloved pianist/conductor - and a wonderfully kind, deeply modest man. "Interpretation should be like a transparent glass, a window for the composer's music." "As long as the musical line is clear, we shouldn’t disturb it too much."

From the 1930’s - unfortunately I don’t know the artist but it’s brilliant. Great times ahead for arms industries. Invest now in our mutual destruction and help finance the new wave of Imperialism and Gunboat diplomacy. What a collection of rogues we have residing in high office
