Some fun #phycologyfriday photos of a small portion of the phytoplankton diversity at Bald Hill Pond in Westmore, VT from September 2023. (aka a Dinobryon party featuring friends)

𝚷ℼℿ𝛑 Happy #PiDay! In honor of everyone’s favorite non-terminating decimal number, the best minds in WHOI Creative came up with these pie charts to help explain the complex system that is the ocean. Now that's solved, we can all eat pie 😆 Gfx by Riley Orlando © #WHOI

I've had an amazing time talking about my favorite topic (aka stochastic disturbance effects on #phytoplankton phenology) with so many incredible scientists, students, and colleagues the last few months. Special thank you to #NAB2024 and #UVMSRC for having me this semester!

This is really a stunning paper. Cyanobacteria exposed to shorter days (in the lab) "rewire" their membrane lipids to anticipate cold weather. When those cells are plunged into cold water, they have "two or three-times higher survival" than cells exposed to longer days.
