🍄 Mycorrhizal fungi take on a huge amount of carbon! It’s equivalent to more than a third of global annual fossil fuel emissions. Phenomenal! It’s clear we need to get more data on mycorrhizal fungi. We’ve overlooked them for too long. theconversation.com/hidden-carbon-…

Excited to have been part of a study in which we estimate that mycorrhizal fungi could move an equivalent amount of carbon as 1/3 of the total carbon released by fossil fuel emissions each year. cell.com/current-biolog…

@ResearchAether The University of Sheffield That’s NOT what we’re saying here, our research shows how much carbon is moved into fungi in soil - that’s how much is there at any one moment. We dont what happens to the carbon longer term - does it get stored? Eaten by microbes? Respired back into the air? More research needed

Beautiful profile of our founding collaborator Merlin Sheldrake by @Kahnifer for @NYTMag. We are enjoying being “startled into curiosity” as we explore underground ecosystems together with Fungi Foundation and all our global collaborators. nytimes.com/2023/06/08/mag…

New research from our grantee SPUN found that fungi draw 13 billion tons of greenhouse gasses underground each year. That’s a third of the world’s total. Story by Amanda Little bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

“Taxonomic” and “genomic fungi” are in mismatch; early diverging fungi closer to unicellular protists in gene content than to Dikarya. A chapter closed in our lab with this NatureEcoEvo paper. #1000FungalGenomes Project. Thread, 1/n. rdcu.be/dfbNL

Thanks NEON for letting me share reflections on making ecology not only more inclusive but also more meaningful for minoritized scientists. For me, that came from understanding the specialized role of ecology in approaching fundamentally *social*-ecological problems.

I've joined SPUN as a postdoctoral data scientist! I'll be developing quantitative methods to evaluate threats to mycorrhizal fungal biodiversity, using eDNA from soils around the globe. Excited to be part of the mission to #ProtectTheUnderground

Successful microbiome engineering in agricultural fields. Our new paper in Nature Microbiology demonstrates that large-scale inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi works and can promote crop yield up to 40%. nature.com/articles/s4156… @SteffiLutz; @NBodenhausen; @KSchlaeppi
