Just been sent this great picture by a local friend who first thought it was a piece of Lego lying on the pavement. Mating lime hawks, Mimas tiliae. Plenty of limes (lindens) planted as street trees hereabouts. Sometimes I’m sent photos of the caterpillars.

Great to find a Lesser Emperor at Cheswick, Nthld, today - a male was hawking over Bramble and Hawthorn next to the England Coast Path by the pool nr Cheswick, too fast for my camera and I last saw it when it was seen off by a male Emperor patrolling the shore below (pictured)
